Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are sometimes used interchangeably and synonymously. There are a few differences between them, however. As a form of treatment, counselling is often wellness-oriented, supporting clients to increase insight and learn new ways to effectively overcome problems and challenges in their life.

Psychotherapy is a treatment designed for more long-standing, often personality-oriented problems and challenges. The course of a psychotherapeutic treatment may be longer and more in-depth than a counselling treatment. To make this all the more confusing, a practitioner may practice both counselling and psychotherapy. The approach they take will depend on the presenting concern of the client. In British Columbia these terms are not regulated, meaning technically anyone can use either title.

It is always a good idea to check a practitioner's credentials and training if those things are important to you. Regulation to the field is on its way, however. For now, in BC psychotherapists and counsellors are often found under the title "Registered Clinical Counsellors" (RCC), or "Canadian Certified Counsellors" (CCC).You can find information about my credentials and training on the "About" page.

How much does each session cost?
I offer a free 20-minute consultation for new and potential clients to gain a sense of how we might work together. After that, individual 60 minute sessions are $153. I offer clients a sliding scale based on individual situations. In a sliding-scale situation we will agree on the session fee depending on how often you want to meet and your financial situation. You are welcome to submit your receipt for counselling to an insurance provider for reimbursement.

I have extended benefits. Do you offer direct billing?

I do not offer direct billing. Many insurance providers offer coverage for counselling and psychotherapy services, but please reach out to your provider to ensure you are covered under your benefits plan. You will receive an invoice after each session that you may submit to your insurance provider using my Registered Clinical Counsellor number (25945).

How do you take payments?
I accept payment through e-transfer at alexis.psychotherapy@gmail.com due before each session.

What is your cancellation policy?

I appreciate 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. I know this is not always possible. Regardless, I appreciate communication when adjustments to an appointment are necessary. In the case of a no-show, 100% of the session will be charged.

Where are your counselling sessions located?
I offer virtual and phone sessions from the comfort of your own home. I meet with clients in person at the Men's Therapy Centre in Victoria, BC. You do not need to be a masculine-identified person to attend in-person sessions here if you are a private practice client. The MTC is located at 3491 Saanich Rd. on the third floor. There is parking behind the building. Please enter the main door, go to floor 3 by stairs or elevator and make yourself comfortable in the waiting room where I will find you. Please email me if you have any questions or concerns about any of this.

How often should I attend?
I recommend attending weekly or biweekly sessions at the beginning of counselling. Meeting at this frequency will offer enough consistency for a trusting relationship and growing familiarity with the counselling process to develop. Sessions can be scaled back if necessary when we sense it is time for a change or if circumstances change otherwise. The frequency of sessions, pace and duration of therapeutic work are determined a collaborative way, based on your unique hopes, goals, challenges and needs. In all these decisions I aim to prioritize your autonomy, and nurture a sense of genuine collaboration.
